Tips for Making a Photoshoot with Children Easier

When I say family photo session, we already know what you're thinking. You see hours of planning and stressing over outfits, getting ready in chaos with unhappy children, arriving to your session already stressed out and not your normal selves, struggling through an hour with an awkward stranger witnessing your children acting like animals and you wanting to cry. We've all been there. It's a nightmare. When you get your images back all you can think about is the stress that day entailed.

As a female and family-owned photography business based in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we understand that photographing children can be challenging. Before your photoshoot, take some time to plan ahead. After you book your session you will receive an in-depth guide on how to plan for your session from outfits to stress. We like to make sure everyone is on the same page and ready to arrive happy and ready to play. Think about the location, the time of day, and what your children will wear. It's also helpful to have a few backup plans in case the weather or other unexpected factors come into play. (Hence, our indoor studio!)

Choosing a location

Choosing a familiar location for your photoshoot can help your children feel more comfortable and relaxed. Does your child feels joy at the beach? By a river? Inside warm and cozy? Consider a location that your children love, such as a park, beach, or backyard. Familiar surroundings can help your children feel more at ease and more willing to cooperate during the photoshoot. Our riverfront studio is so calming and relaxing, if water in the magical woods is your thing we have the vibes you are going for!

Bring snacks and drinks

Children can get easily distracted or cranky during a photoshoot. Bringing snacks and drinks can help keep your children happy and focused. Make sure to bring healthy snacks and drinks that won't stain clothes or make a mess. At our studio we have a wide variety of snacks, and a refrigerator filled with juice, bubbly water, soda, beer and wine! Nobody wants to play when they are hangry, young and old alike!

Keep it fun

Photographing children should be a fun experience for everyone involved. Encourage your children to play and have fun during the photoshoot. This means adults also want to be playful. Enjoy the little moments and leave the directions and prompts to us. Let them be themselves and capture their unique personalities. This will result in more natural and authentic photos that you'll treasure for years to come.
