Zooming into Year One: A "Fast One" Racecar Cake Smash
They say the first year of parenthood goes by in the blink of an eye, and nothing proves that more than a "Fast One" birthday celebration! I recently had the best time in the studio with a sweet little guy who was ready to trade his crawling gears for some high-speed racing fun.
The Starting Line
For this session, we transformed the studio into a vintage-inspired racetrack. We kept it classic with checkered flags, tiny traffic cones, and miniature race cars. It was the perfect backdrop for a high-energy one-year-old who was ready to move!
The Young Racer
Our birthday boy looked the part in a racing onesie, complete with a "Number 1" badge. Seeing him explore the set was so much fun—there’s a specific kind of curiosity that comes with this age, and capturing that wonder is exactly why I love what I do.
A Sweet Victory from Lovelee Cakes
The "trophy" for this race was a custom creation from Lovelee Cakes in Monroe, WA. They absolutely nailed the theme with a racetrack design, edible mini cars, and a finish line. It’s always a treat to have their work in the studio—not only does it look incredible in photos, but I have it on good authority that it tastes pretty great, too!
Our little racer started with some inquisitive pokes at the frosting (testing the tires, perhaps?), but it wasn't long before he hit full throttle. There were handfuls of cake, plenty of blue frosting, and a lot of giggles as he made his way to the finish line.
Taking a Pit Stop for Family
While the cake smash is the main event, I always love to slow things down for a few family portraits. We shifted gears to some neutral backgrounds to capture those quiet, candid moments between mom, dad, and their birthday boy. After 10 years of shooting families, I’ve learned that these are the photos you’ll look back on years from now and remember exactly how it felt to hold them when they were this small.
The Final Lap
As the session wrapped up, it was clear that this "Fast One" was a huge success. It was more than just a photoshoot; it was a way to anchor the memories of a year that truly did fly by at full throttle.
To our favorite little racecar enthusiast: may you always chase your dreams with that same infectious energy. Happy first birthday!
